Manaslu, also known as Kutang, the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163m (26,781ft) above sea level. It is in the Mansiri Himal, part of the Nepalese Himalayas, in west-central Nepal. Manaslu means "mountain of the spirit" and the word is derived from the Sanskrit word manasa, meaning "intellect" or "soul". Manaslu was first climbed on May 9, 1956, by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition.
Manaslu is the highest peak in the Gorkha District and is about 64 km east of Annapurna, the tenth highest mountain in the world at 8,091 metres (26,545 ft) above sea level. Manaslu's long ridges and valley glaciers offer feasible approaches from all directions and culminate in a peak that towers steeply above its surrounding landscape and is a dominant feature when viewed from afar.
Upon landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, our expedition team will welcome you and assist with immigration and baggage formalities. You will then be transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, the remainder of the day is free for rest or a short walk around the lively streets of the capital. This relaxed first day allows you to recover from travel and begin adjusting to Nepal.
Today is dedicated to final expedition preparations. Your expedition leader will conduct a comprehensive briefing covering the climbing route, safety guidelines, acclimatization strategy, and communication procedures. The team also reviews all personal and group equipment to ensure everything is ready for the expedition. If necessary, there will be time to obtain or rent additional gear in Kathmandu.
After breakfast, you begin a scenic overland drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola, the gateway to the Manaslu region. The journey passes through rolling hills, terraced farmland, and small villages that showcase rural Nepalese life. After several hours on winding mountain roads, you reach Soti Khola, located beside the Budhi Gandaki River, where you stay overnight in a local lodge.
Your trekking journey officially begins today. The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River through lush forests and traditional villages. Along the route you cross suspension bridges and narrow hillside paths while enjoying views of waterfalls and terraced fields. After several hours of walking, you reach Machha Khola, a small riverside village where you spend the night.
Today’s trek continues upstream along the Budhi Gandaki Valley. The trail alternates between rocky riverbanks and forest paths, with several bridge crossings along the way. Passing small settlements and natural hot springs, the valley gradually becomes steeper and more dramatic. By afternoon you reach Jagat, a charming stone village that serves as the entrance checkpoint to the Manaslu Conservation Area.
Leaving Jagat, the trail climbs gradually through forests and narrow gorges. You will cross several suspension bridges and follow sections carved into steep cliffs above the river. As the altitude increases, the landscape begins to change, and Tibetan cultural elements become more noticeable in the villages. Overnight stay in the quiet settlement of Deng.
Today the route climbs steadily through forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron. The Budhi Gandaki Valley opens gradually, revealing distant snow-covered peaks. The influence of Tibetan culture becomes stronger, visible in stone houses, mani walls, and prayer flags. By late afternoon you arrive at Namrung, a beautiful mountain village with impressive views of surrounding peaks.
The trek continues through alpine landscapes and traditional villages such as Lho and Shyala. Along the way you will enjoy spectacular views of surrounding Himalayan giants including Himalchuli and Mount Manaslu. By afternoon you reach Samagaun, a culturally rich village located beneath the massive north face of Manaslu.
These days are important for proper acclimatization before moving to higher elevations. Short hikes are organized to nearby viewpoints and cultural sites such as Pungyen Gompa or the trail toward Larkya La Pass. These excursions allow you to gain elevation during the day while returning to Samagaun to sleep at a lower altitude. The remaining time is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for the next stage of the expedition.
Today you ascend toward Manaslu Base Camp, trekking across alpine meadows and glacial moraine terrain. The views become increasingly dramatic as the towering glaciers and ice walls of Manaslu dominate the landscape. After several hours of steady climbing, you arrive at Base Camp, where the climbing team establishes camp beneath the mountain.
This period forms the main climbing phase of the expedition. During these weeks, climbers make several acclimatization rotations between Base Camp and the higher camps. The team gradually establishes camps, fixes ropes along key sections, and prepares the route for the summit attempt.Rest days are scheduled throughout the climbing period to ensure proper acclimatization and recovery. Weather forecasts are carefully monitored, and the summit push is planned during the most stable weather window. Patience, teamwork, and careful planning are essential throughout this phase of the expedition.
After completing the climbing phase, the team descends from Base Camp back to Samagaun. Losing altitude brings noticeable relief as oxygen levels increase and the body begins to recover. The welcoming village atmosphere of Samagaun provides a comfortable place to rest after weeks in the high mountains.
Over the next several days you retrace the trekking route down the Budhi Gandaki Valley. Passing through villages such as Namrung, Deng, and Jagat, the journey feels easier as the altitude decreases. The return trek offers time to reflect on the expedition while enjoying the diverse landscapes of the Manaslu region once again.
Today you return to Kathmandu by road. The drive follows mountain highways through villages, terraced hillsides, and river valleys before reentering the busy capital. Upon arrival, you check in to your hotel and enjoy the comforts of the city after weeks in the mountains.
These final days are reserved for relaxation and contingency. A formal expedition debrief will be conducted with the climbing team, and a farewell dinner celebrates the achievements of the expedition. You may also explore Kathmandu’s cultural landmarks, shop for souvenirs, or simply relax at your hotel.
Your Himalayan journey concludes today. Our team will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight. As you depart Nepal, you take home unforgettable memories and the remarkable experience of climbing one of the world’s great Himalayan peaks.
