Trip Overview

The Makalu base camp is an awe-inspiring journey that takes you to the foot of the fifth-highest mountain in the world, Mount.  Located in the eastern part of Nepal, this trek offers a unique combination of cultural and natural beauty, making it an ideal adventure for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Makalu Region remained largely unexplored until the late 1950s, when an American expedition led by William Siri conducted the first scientific exploration of the area. The summit of Mount Makalu (8,485 m) was successfully climbed in 1955 by a French expedition led by Jean Franco.

Detailed Itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in, you can rest or explore the lively streets of Thamel. In the evening, there will be a short briefing about the upcoming adventure to Makalu Base Camp.

This day is reserved for final expedition preparation. You will meet your climbing guide for a detailed briefing and equipment check. Any missing or rental gear can be arranged in Kathmandu before heading to the mountains.

We take a scenic domestic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, enjoying beautiful aerial views of the eastern Himalayas. After landing, you will experience the warm culture of eastern Nepal. Overnight stay in Tumlingtar.

After breakfast, we drive through rural hills and villages to Num. From here, the trek begins with a descent to Arun River and a climb toward Seduwa. This marks the start of our journey through the remote Makalu region.

Today’s trail gradually climbs through terraced fields, forests, and small settlements. You will enjoy scenic views and experience the traditional lifestyle of local communities. Overnight stay in Tashi Gaon.

The trail ascends steeply through dense rhododendron and oak forests. As you gain altitude, the scenery becomes more alpine and dramatic. Khongma Danda offers spectacular mountain views.

To adapt to higher altitude, we spend a rest day here with a short acclimatization hike. The hike provides beautiful panoramic views of surrounding peaks and valleys. Proper acclimatization helps prepare for higher elevations ahead.

Today’s trail crosses several high passes and ridges with stunning Himalayan scenery. The walk includes gradual climbs and descents through alpine terrain. Overnight stay at Dobato.

We descend through beautiful forests into the Barun Valley. The trail follows the Barun River, offering breathtaking views of glaciers and rugged peaks. Yangle Kharka is a peaceful grazing area surrounded by mountains.

The landscape becomes more open and alpine as we trek higher into the valley. Snow-capped peaks begin to dominate the skyline. Langmale Kharka provides excellent views of surrounding Himalayan giants.

Today we reached the base camp of Mount Makalu. The trail passes glaciers, rocky terrain, and high alpine landscapes. Upon arrival, you will enjoy magnificent views of Makalu and surrounding peaks.

This day is dedicated to exploring the spectacular surroundings of the base camp. You can enjoy panoramic views of Makalu, Baruntse, and other Himalayan peaks. It is a perfect day for photography and rest.

After a memorable stay at base camp, we begin our descent following the same scenic trail. The journey back offers different perspectives of the valley and mountains. Overnight at Yangle Kharka.

We retrace our steps through alpine terrain and forested trails. The descent is easier but still offers stunning scenery. Overnight stay in Dobato.

Today we continue descending through high ridges and forests. The views of valleys and distant peaks remain impressive throughout the trek. Overnight at Khongma Danda.
